I compiled a list of “best selling” sergers in November 2017 because at the time I was asked to give my opinion about a good entry-level serger; I personally still like very much my trusted Janome 990D. The Janome 990D was still sold as of 2019 in some stores ( ex. Sewingmachinesplus.com, Inc., ) but of course, by now there are a number of newer models from Janome and other manufacturers, I myself have reviewed the excellent Juki MO-2000. Of course, this is in a different price class than an entry-level serger.
In November 2017 the list was as follows
- Brother 1034D 3/4 Thread Serger
- SINGER 14CG754 ProFinish Serger
- JUKI MO644D Portable Serger
- Brother 3234DT 2, 3, or 4 Thread Serger with Differential Feed
- SINGER 14SH6540 Differential-Feed Serger
- Brother Designio Series DZ1234 Serger
- Janome MyLock 634D
- Juki MO-735 5-Thread Serger & Cover Hem
- Janome Cover Pro 1000CPX Coverstitch Machine
- Juki MCS-1500 Cover Stitch and Chain Stitch Machine
What did the list look like in August 2019? See below:
- Brother R1634D 3 or 4 Thread Serger with Differential Feed, White (Renewed)
- SINGER | ProFinish 14CG754 2-3-4 Thread Serger with Adjustable Stitch Length & Differential Feed – Sewing Made Easy, White
- Crafter’s Companion Gemini Lock Pro Serger, Color-Coded Threading Guide, Dial Stitch Length, Presser Foot Pressure Adjustment
- Brother ST4031HD Serger, Strong & Tough Serger, 1,300 Stitches Per Minute, Durable Metal Frame Overlock Machine, Large Extension Table, 3 Included Accessory Feet
- Juki MCS-1500 Cover Stitch and Chain Stitch Machine
- Juki 1-Needle, 3-Thread Overlock Machine MO-623
- Janome 7933 Serger with Lay-In Threading, 3 and 4 Thread Convertible with Differential Feed
- Brother Serger, DZ1234, Metal Frame Overlock Machine, 1,300 Stitches Per Minute, Removable Trim Trap, 3 Included Accessory Feet, and 2 Sets of Starter Thread
- Brother Serger, 1034DX, Durable Metal frame Overlock Machine 1,300 Stitches Per Minute, Trim Trap, 3 Accessory Feet, and Protective Cover Included
- Singer Finishing Touch 14SH654 Serger
- Juki MO-114D Serger Overlock Machine
What does the list look like now? See below. Please note: I will only consider machines that have good reviews. Machines with a large number of negative reviews will be skipped even if on the best-selling list. Also, since the list is based on the volume of sales, do not expect to find high-end machines here; most are entry-level, and some are older models. I don’t own any of them though, as I said my current machines are a Janome 990d and a Juki MO-2000!
I have a piece of advice though: like with all purchases, you should carefully evaluate your needs ( what kind of stitches you really need ) and situation ( how far are you from a service center, should things go wrong ) and then buy the best machine that you can afford. If maintained properly, a good serger will serve you faithfully for years. You will grow to know it, its quirks, its good and bad points, and in time you will also learn to use it better and better.
Juki MCS-1500 Cover Stitch and Chain Stitch Machine (this is a combination of simple serger/coverstitch)
Juki 1-Needle, 3-Thread Overlock Machine MO-623 (I do not recommend a 3thread serger myself)
Brother Coverstitch Serger, 2340CV, Sturdy Metal Frame, 1,100 Stitches Per Minute, Trim Trap, Included Snap-on Presser Feet (also a combination coverstitch/serger)
