Dolls can’t wear the same outfit every day! But American Girl clothes are expensive. DIY American Girl clothes are very easy & fast to make & they cost next to nothing.
The best socks to use are knitted woman size knee high socks that are very stretchy. But man dress socks can also be used. I prefer women’s socks because they are more colorful.
There is not much sewing to do, but the characteristics of the material make it impossible to do it with a regular sewing machine. So you would need a serger / overlock or sew it by hand.
The serger stitch is perfect for the sock’s stretchy knit fabric. It has two rows of straight stitches that make seams strong & durable. The serger overcasts the raw edges simultaneously

Making tights from one sock is very easy! Cut the bottom of the sock and cut the top tube part of the sock along the front folded line. Each side will become one leg of the tights.
You’ll need to make only one stitch starting at bottom of 1 leg going around to the crotch & ending at the bottom of the other leg. A serger is the best for this stitch. But you can do it by hand too.
And the other sock from the pair will be used to make the hoodie and the beanie.We will cut the sock in three parts. Top part of the sock with one finished edge goes for sleeves.
The toe end of the sock goes for the beanie. The middle of the sock goes for the bodice. I cut 2 holes for inserting the sleeves - somewhere in the middle. The hood is formed by the heel of the sock.
